September 26, 2006World Biofuels Symposium Update
Beijing, China – The 2006 World Biofuels Symposium – China (WBS) closed Friday, September 15th after four days of stellar educational and networking opportunities. The event launched on Tuesday, September 12th with an excellent tour of the China Resources Alcohol Co. ethanol plant located in China's agricultural center, Zhaodong City, Heilongjiang Province. The tour was graciously hosted by China Resources Alcohol Co., Ltd., and participants were shown the existing major production facility, the new plant under construction (scheduled to be in operation soon), as well as the high tech pilot plant for cellulose conversion to ethanol.
Wednesday, Tsinghua University hosted a special Student Seminar at which students made presentations on the latest important research underway on biofuels. The event was sponsored by DuPont. Also Tuesday, a roundtable for Biofuels Associations was hosted by BBI International at which open discussions were held about the need for a global biofuels organization and what the organization should have as its purpose. BBI International will launch the organization by the end of 2006 as a means of assisting and strengthening the development of biofuels worldwide.
Thursday, over 225 WBS delegates were offered a deeper understanding of biofuels in China through presentations from high-level speakers representing numerous Chinese companies and government agencies. Speakers from Shell Oil, General Motors and DuPont also shared their perspectives on the future of biofuels. Fuel ethanol is developing rapidly in China. Nine provinces are testing 10% blends with the intention of eventually offering it countrywide. There is strong interest in using feedstocks beyond corn, such as cassava, sweet sorghum, sweet potatoes and more. The development of a technology to make ethanol from cellulosic/biomass feedstocks is a high priority and universities and companies are working diligently to make it commercially viable. Even though biodiesel doesn’t have the same level of support from the government currently, there is a tremendous interest by many in its production and use.
More details about the 2006 Symposium will be in Ethanol Producer Magazine and Biodiesel Magazine in upcoming issues. The 2007 World Biofuels Symposium – China will be held again in Beijing. The date and location will be posted on the web site, www.worldbiofuelssymposium.com soon. Plan to join us for this unique, premier networking and informational event.
