November 10, 2000Brazil to raise ethanol output in 2001-industry source
Brazilian millers, who already produced more ethanol than sugar from sugar cane this year, intend to boost the percentage of ethanol further next year if oil prices remain high, Henrique Amorim, president of ethanol technology company Fermentec, said on Thursday.
This year Brazil produced 55 percent ethanol, 45 percent sugar from sugar cane, Amorim said after addressing an F.O. Licht world ethanol conference.
"The mix depends on oil prices," Amorim told Reuters afterwards.
Oil prices are hovering just above $30 a barrel, near 10 year highs, as industrialised countries prepare to enter the northern hemisphere winter with reduced stocks and amid escalating tension in the Middle East.
"Fuel ethanol now subsidises gasoline," Amorim said.
