June 20, 2000Chicago Hearing Examining High Gasoline Prices In testimony to members of Congress at a Chicago hearing examining high gasoline prices, Eric Vaughn today urged oil refiners to utilize existing ethanol supply and production capacity to ease tight Midwest gasoline inventories and lower the price of gasoline.
"Areas that are running out of gasoline can extend supplies and lower prices simply by adding ethanol," said Eric Vaughn, president of the Renewable Fuels Association (RFA). "Consumers would see immediate relief. There are reports of gas stations running out of gasoline. If refiners
can't supply these markets, the ethanol industry will. U.S. ethanol production continues at a record pace and supplies are plentiful. The only thing preventing additional volume being added to Midwest fuel supplies is the reluctance on the part of many oil companies to use non-petroleum
products. Oil refiners should begin to blend 10 percent ethanol in every Midwest market today."
