ETHANOL-BLENDED DIESEL DEMONSTRATION MAKES IMPROVEMENT CLEAR

E-Diesel is the Cost-Effective Way to Meet Tough, New Diesel Fuel Regulations

Las Vegas, NV - Two diesel engines roared to life today in Las Vegas following a press conference touting the benefits of blending ethanol with traditional diesel fuel. The benefits of ethanol were immediately obvious to those watching the Nevada Ready Mix Corporation's gravel haulers. A black cloud of soot rose from the exhaust pipe of the gravel hauler running on traditional diesel fuel. However, an identical gravel hauler fueled with ethanol-blended diesel (e-diesel) rumbled awake with no sign of the black smoke often associated with diesel engines.

"Diesel emissions are much worse than gasoline emissions," said Eric Vaughn, president of the Renewable Fuels Association. "Coming just days after scientists from the University of California-Berkeley, Coalition for Clean Air, and Natural Resources Defense Council reported that diesel emissions, especially particulate matter, are harming children in school buses, this demonstration is a clear-cut example of the benefits of e-diesel. E-diesel dramatically reduces particulate matter emissions by 30 to 40 percent and also greatly reduces visible smoke, oxides of nitrogen (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), and toxics. We owe it to our children and everyone to quickly build on the extensive testing of e-diesel and to move this product to the market."

The e-diesel demonstration was coordinated by the Renewable Fuels Association at the 6th Annual National Ethanol Conference. Ethanol producers, three fuel additive companies, and environmental officials joined forces to bring the positive benefits of e-diesel to the public's attention. E-diesel is a mixture of 5 to 15 percent ethanol, 1 to 5 percent fuel additive (to prevent separation) and standard diesel fuel. No engine modifications are required.

"E-diesel is the best, most cost-effective way to bridge the pollution gap between today's diesel engines and the proposed clean diesel regulations," said Eric Vaughn. "If e-diesel achieved the same market penetration as ethanol-blended gasoline, it would be a new market for over 500 million gallons of ethanol. That would be a major victory for the environment, rural economies, and energy security.
