February 27, 2001$3 Million Ethanol Program Proposed for Wisconsin Wisconsin State Journal
Governor Scott McCallum has proposed a $3 million program to ecnourage ethanol production in Wisconsin. The proposal would provide a 20-cent per-gallon payment to producers on the first 15 million gallon of fuel ethanol produced in the state.
In recent years, over 70 million gallons of ethanol has been used in Wisconsin's motor fuel, however, there is currently no ethanol production in the state.
There are, however, several planned facilities, including Badger State Ethanol LLC, a 40 million gallon per year plant proposed for Monroe County. Another project is slated for South Central Wisconsin by the Nesnah Corporation.
If approved, the ethanol legislation would take affect July 1, 2002 and be administered by the state agriculture department.
McCallum said his proposal would encourage production of ethanol and help farmers add value to their crops, while reducing the importaion of ethanol produced in other states.
