March 7, 2001ETHANOL INDUSTRY STARTS 2001 JUST WHERE IT LEFT OFF IN 2000 - WITH RECORD MONTHLY PRODUCTION "The ethanol industry continues to be the shining star in the middle of an energy crisis black hole," says RFA President Eric Vaughn
The Renewable Fuels Association (RFA) has announced the domestic ethanol industry started 2001 by setting a new all-time monthly production record. According to data released by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), the ethanol industry produced over 115,000 barrels per day (b/d) in January of this year. This new record exceeds the previous monthly record of 113,000 b/d set only the month before in December of 2000.
"The ethanol industry continues to be the shining star in the middle of an energy crisis black hole," said Eric Vaughn, president of the RFA. "Increased ethanol production is providing a vital source of octane, oxygen, and volume during the worst energy crisis this country has seen in a decade. On this, the 10th anniversary of the Gulf War, OPEC is ratcheting up the price of crude oil, our fastest growing oil supplier is Iraq, and unrest in the Middle East continues to be of concern. In contrast, the U.S. ethanol industry keeps expanding to meet demand, thereby enhancing U.S. energy security and reducing our trade deficit with the Middle East."
The 2.6 million gallon increase in ethanol production from December to January translates into over 30 million gallons of additional ethanol-blended fuel. The increased ethanol production is a boon for farmers who saw more than a million additional bushels of corn go toward ethanol production in January compared to the previous month.
"The ethanol industry refuses to rest on the accomplishments of 2000," said Vaughn. "We are dedicated to becoming the energy success story of 2001. Record ethanol production boosts rural economies, increases farm income, protects clean air and water, and lowers prices for consumers. As the ethanol industry plays an integral role in President Bush's domestic energy agenda, consumers will benefit from the increased use of ethanol - the low-cost, high- performance, clean air gasoline additive."
