April 2, 2001Australia sugar sees big output boost from ethanol Australian sugar cane growers welcomed on Monday a Federal government decision to provide A$8.8 million (US$4.3 million) to BP Australia Ltd for development of infrastructure for ethanol use at its Brisbane refinery.
Queensland sugarcane growers had been advocating for many years the potential benefits of a commercial industry producing ethanol from sugar cane for use as a fuel extender, Ian Ballantyne, general manager of CANEGROWERS, said on Monday.
Up to five percent of the Queensland sugar crop, which in a normal year amounts to more than 35 million tonnes of cane, could be used in refining the new fuel, if the plan goes ahead.
A sugar-based ethanol industry could result in a substantial increase in the area planted to cane, Ballantyne said.
BP Australia, a unit of BP Amoco Plc , said on Monday it was examining producing fuels containing up to 10 percent ethanol at its 80,000 barrels per day Bulwer Island refinery at Brisbane.
BP spokesman Neil McMaster said the company would complete a feasibility study over about the next five months on a possible A$50-A$60 million ethanol-related investment in the refinery.
The study would examine possible sources of ethanol, including sugar and wheat, and what changes would be needed at the refinery.
Federal Agriculture Minister Warren Truss said use of the ethanol blend fuel would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 1.1 million tonnes over five years.
"We welcome any step forward, no matter how small, towards the goal of a long-term sustainable fuel ethanol industry," CANEGROWERS' Ballantyne said in a statement.
