April 5, 2001Archer Daniels Midland, China in Talks to Build Ethanol Plant Archer Daniels Midland Co. is negotiating with the Chinese government to build ethanol plants in the world's most populous nation, Chief Executive G. Allen Andreas said.
China, the No. 2 corn-growing nation after the U.S., is interested in ethanol production because the fuel is a cheap way of stretching gasoline supplies and helping engines to run more efficiently, Andreas said in an interview.
``With the high cost of petroleum, they are very interested in ethanol as an alternative fuel,'' Andreas said. There was ``such a large surplus of corn grown in China last year that they exported about 10 million'' metric tons, he said.
