April 13, 2001REP. LAHOOD SEES IMPORTANT ROLE FOR ETHANOL IN NATIONAL ENERGY POLICY Ethanol should have a prominent role in the nation's domestic energy policy agenda, according to Rep. Ray LaHood (R-IL). In a recent letter to Vice President Dick Cheney, who leads the Administration's energy policy team, LaHood encouraged the Vice President to promote the increased production and use of renewable fuels such as ethanol. "It creates jobs and stimulates the economy here at home, provides clean air and clean water, and reduces our dependence on foreign energy sources," LaHood said.
Noting that U.S. oil refining capacity is "maxed out," LaHood said ethanol can help address the shortfall. "At this time, domestic ethanol refining capacity is expanding by leaps and bounds and can help to address our nation's growing energy crisis," LaHood said.
"While domestic crude oil production was down 0.7 percent least year, U.S. ethanol production grew almost 20 percent, to a record 1.63 billion gallons," LaHood said. "Current U.S. ethanol production capacity exceeds 2 billion gallons annually, and it is expected to increase 250 million gallons this year and another 350 million gallons in 2002. While refiners look overseas for investment opportunities, farmers are investing here at home."
"Ethanol is well-suited to be a partner with domestic refiners to assure the continued cost-effective supply of clean burning, high performance motor fuels to the driving public," said LaHood. "Promoting the increased production and use of renewable fuels, such as ethanol, simply makes sense… Ethanol deserves to have a prominent role in the Administration's energy plan.
