May 2, 2001Cheney Says US Needs More Domestic Fuel, Refineries The U.S. needs to step up natural gas production, increase its ability to refine oil, and consider increasing the use of nuclear power to deal with an energy ``crisis,'' Vice President Dick Cheney said.
``Without a clear, coherent energy strategy for the nation, all Americans could one day go through what Californians are experiencing now, or worse,'' Cheney said in a speech before the Associated Press in Toronto.
Cheney previewed recommendations his Cabinet-level task force will make in a few weeks as President George W. Bush considers how to deliver on his campaign promise to help the U.S. reduce dependence on foreign oil and ensure energy supplies for years to come. Critics, including congressional Democrats, say Bush needs to put more emphasis on reducing demand.
The vice president defended Bush's plan to drill for oil in the 19-million-acre Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Critics' contention that drilling in the Alaskan refuge would ``despoil the environment is provably false'' because of improved oil-drilling technology, Cheney said in his speech.
The Alaska drilling proposal faces resistance in the U.S. Senate, and public opinion polls show little support for drilling in the refuge, a habitat for caribou and other wildlife.
