July 31, 2001Science report urges changes in U.S. fuel standards The National Academy of Sciences on Monday released a wide-ranging set of recommendations to improve U.S. fuel efficiency standards, and said the standards in place since the mid-1970s have cut U.S. gasoline use by 2.8 million barrels per day.
The report by the independent science panel urged policymakers to adopt fuel standards based on vehicle weight to encourage Detroit automakers to scale down the weight of sport utility vehicles, pickup trucks and minivans.
The panel also called for more research into whether lighter weight vehicles are riskier for consumers.
The scientists also urged an end to automaker mileage credits for vehicles using both ethanol and gasoline, but proposed expanding the ability of automakers to sell efficiency credits to other companies to bring their fleets into compliance.
The current fuel efficiency standards require an average of 27.5 miles per gallon for passenger cars and 20.7 miles per gallon for light-duty trucks such as minivans and sport utility vehicles.
