Marubeni and TSK Acquire Rights to BCI's Biomass Ethanol Technology for Southeast Asia

Through a multi-million dollar deal, Marubeni Corporation (Marubeni) and Tsukishima Kikai Co., Ltd. (TSK) announced the acquisition of rights to exclusively license and use BC International Corporation's (BCI) proprietary biomass ethanol technology in Southeast Asia.

BCI's technology enables the cost-effective conversion of agricultural and forestry wastes (rice straw, rice hulls, waste sugar cane, tree limbs, etc.) into ethanol and other value-added chemicals. Ethanol is a clean burning transportation fuel and safer alternative to MTBE, that can be blended with gasoline or used alone. Given the abundance of biomass waste in Southeast Asia and the region's potential demand for clean energy, the biomass ethanol fuel industry could grow to a multi-billion dollar (U.S. $) market in the region.

Marubeni, a Japanese-based multinational conglomerate, has significant experience in the ethanol business, and TSK has strong ties and technical experience with the sugar industry in Southeast Asia. Together, Marubeni and TSK will introduce the technology as a way for the sugar and other rural industries to capitalize on higher value use of biomass waste and increase local fuel production.

"Our companies saw the strong potential of BCI's technology in Southeast Asia and decided to acquire it jointly due to the combined strength of our technology experience in the energy and agricultural sectors and successes with business ventures in the region," said Ryuji Tahara, President of TSK. "Initially, we plan to use the biomass ethanol technology to develop a project in Thailand, where 90% of gasoline comes from imported petroleum."

The use of ethanol instead of petroleum as a transportation fuel will help to reduce air pollution, such as smog, and greenhouse gas emissions caused by Southeast Asia's rapidly growing transportation sector. Biomass ethanol burns cleaner than petroleum based gasoline. Because ethanol can be made from plants that have captured CO2 from the air in order to grow, using ethanol does not increase net CO2 emissions.

"We are extremely pleased to be working with Marubeni and TSK and anticipate that this will be the beginning of a mutually rewarding long-term relationship." "Marubeni and TSK provide BCI with partners that have the necessary industry expertise and relationships to ensure that the environmental and economic benefits of our biomass ethanol technology are effectively and profitably shared with Southeast Asia," added Stephen Gatto, Chairman and CEO of BC International.
