September 28, 2001August Ethanol Production Increases 16% Over Last Year Production Record is 22nd of the Last 23 Months
WASHINGTON, DC -The Renewable Fuels Association (RFA) today announced the U.S. ethanol industry set a production record for the month of August. According to data released today, the ethanol industry produced over 114,000 barrels per day (b/d) in August of this year. This new record exceeds the previous August record of 98,000 b/d set in 2000, an increase of over 16 percent. August's record was the 22nd monthly production record out of the last 23 months.
"Recent events have once again reminded us of the very real price we as a nation pay for our dependence on imported oil," said Bob Dinneen, president of the RFA. "As we look to develop homeland energy security, we should be looking at homegrown energy solutions - like ethanol."
August's production record puts the ethanol industry on target to produce an annual record of over 1.8 billion gallons of ethanol in 2001. The
ethanol industry will also set a new capacity expansion record this year. There are thirteen ethanol plants under construction and 57 plants in
operation.
"As noted by this latest monthly production record, the domestic ethanol industry is already on the front lines of the energy independence battle," said Dinneen. "While other domestic energy sources are cutting back, the U.S. ethanol industry is producing at an unprecedented rate. With the plant expansions and new construction underway, ethanol should play a major role in the formulation of our national energy policy."
