January 9, 2002Gas Prices On The Rise Again The roller-coaster ride of gasoline prices continues.
After flirting with per-gallon prices under $1, prices have started to climb again.
"It was $16 to $17 for me to fill up (last month). Now it's about 20 bucks," motorist Joe Hill said.
Prices can vary from station to station, from $1.09 to $1.15 only a couple blocks apart.
Gasoline distributors reached by Channel 4's Damany Lewis said it's just a matter of simple economics: When the price of oil goes up for them, they just have to raise the prices at the pump. They also said prices could go up as much as a nickel more by the weekend.
While some people Channel 4 spoke with Tuesday thought the weather is to blame for the higher gas prices, others thought it's just oil company greed. But everyone agreed prices could be a lot worse.
According to AAA numbers, a gallon of unleaded gasoline in Florida averaged $1.47 in December 2000. Last month, it was 39 cents lower: $1.08.
