February 25, 2002Governor Announces “E-Diesel” Research Project with John Deere SPRINGFIELD – Governor George H. Ryan today announced a new ethanol research project with John Deere to test, develop and demonstrate ethanol-blended diesel fuel. The fuel, known as “E-Diesel” will be evaluated in industrial diesel engines manufactured by the Moline-based company.
“This is a tremendous opportunity to further expand the use of ethanol and its proven clean air and clean water benefits,” the Governor said. “Developing renewable fuels such as E-Diesel is the cornerstone of our state energy policy and is a priority of my administration.”
The announcement was made during the “2002 Commodity Classic,” in Nashville, sponsored by the National Corn Growers Association and the American Soybean Association.
“This is our most extensive ethanol project to date,” said Illinois Department of Commerce and Community Affairs (DCCA) Director Pam McDonough. “John Deere is one of the most respected names in agriculture, and we are proud to work with the company to test and demonstrate the use of E-Diesel in several product lines. The testing done now will have long term benefits for Illinois agriculture and the environment.”
The two-year test will involve laboratory research, emission testing, field trials and demonstrations throughout the country involving 4.5, 8.1 and 12-liter diesel engines. The engines are used to power off-highway Deere products ranging from skid steers, to tractors and combines.
DCCA is partially funding the project over two years through a $500,000 alternative energy research and development grant.
“This will be a comprehensive research and testing program for E-Diesel,” said Barry Nelson, manager, public relations, John Deere. “We will provide equipment to test this experimental fuel under real world conditions and help to evaluate its potential in the marketplace.”
The John Deere E-Diesel research and demonstration project is sponsored by John Deere, the Illinois Department of Commerce and Community Affairs, the Illinois Corn Marketing Board, the Renewable Fuels Association, and State Corn Grower Associations from Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Nebraska, and Ohio.
