April 16, 2002Great Plains Ethanol, LLC Breaks Ground in South Dakota South Dakota is Home to 5 Ethanol Plants and 3 Under Construction
WASHINGTON, DC – The Renewable Fuels Association (RFA) congratulated the farmer-owners of Great Plains Ethanol, LLC who broke ground Saturday on an ethanol production facility in Chancellor, South Dakota. The plant is being built by The Broin Companies of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and will produce 40 million gallons of ethanol per year.
“The tension in the Middle East and Iraq’s oil embargo have really focused attention on the need to increase our domestic sources of energy,” said Bob Dinneen, RFA president. “By building an ethanol plant, the farmer-owners of Great Plains Ethanol will not only reap the benefits of value-added processing, but they help fight our war on energy dependence. I congratulate them on their commitment to improving farm incomes and enhancing U.S. energy security.”
In the last two years, 15 ethanol production facilities have opened and several major expansions to existing facilities have been completed. Today, 61 ethanol plants have the capacity to produce over 2.3 billion gallons per year. There are 14 ethanol plants currently under construction that encompass over 430 million gallons of new production capacity. Dozens of additional production facilities across the country are in various stages of development, engineering and financing.
“We are trilled to be designing, building, and managing our 15th U.S. ethanol plant for the owners of Great Plains Ethanol,” said Jeff Broin, CEO of The Broin Companies. “We continue to see strong interest in new ethanol capacity in all grain producing areas.”
