August 17, 2000ADM to Export Ethanol to Brazil to Relieve Fuel Shortage Archer Daniels Midland Co. said it will sell 20 million gallons of ethanol to Brazil after dry weather and frost reduced the country's production of sugar used to make the fuel additive.
Sugar production in Brazil's south-central region could be reduced by 20 percent this year, said Decatur, Illinois-based ADM, the largest U.S. ethanol producer. Sugar cane is used to produce ethanol in Brazil, while corn is used in the U.S.
``Their industry knows our industry and we try to help each other out during shortages,'' ADM Senior Vice President Martin Andreas said in a statement.
