April 29, 2002Central Missouri farmers looking at building ethanol plant Two central Missouri farmers' groups are considering building an ethanol plant, which would be the state's third facility to produce fuel from corn.
The Carrollton-based Farmer Steering Committee for Ethanol and the Marshall area Mid-Missouri Energy Group have commissioned a feasibility study to look at local markets for ethanol. The study would build on one by the Missouri Corn Growers Association, which found that the state could support three more ethanol plants.
There are currently two ethanol plants in Missouri - Golden Triangle Energy in Craig in northwest Missouri and Northeast Missouri Grain in Macon. Each produces about 15 million gallons annually.
Farmers in central Missouri paid for the latest study.
"We've got nothing but good response from everyone. Most people are interested in a form of ownership," said Ron Linneman, chairman of the Farmer Steering Committee.
The two groups have also applied for a government grant to cover some of the start-up costs.
Meanwhile, Renewable Power of Missouri plans to build a 30-million gallon ethanol plant in Marshall.
"If we have two in the area, we probably have enough corn to support it," said Mid-Missouri Energy chairman Ryland Utlaut.
His group initially formed to represent farmers in negotiating for a partnership in Renewable Power's plant, but those talks stalled.
