August 21, 2000Soy-derived biodiesel use edging up in the U.S. Biodiesel, a fuel made from soybean oil or reclaimed cooking oil, is gaining more acceptance in the United States on a surge of interest among school and transit fleets, an industry group said on Friday.
"There is a tremendous surge of interest in biodiesel among school and transit fleets all over the country," said Sam McMahon, regulatory director of the National Biodiesel Board.
The Jefferson City, Missouri, based Board said in a statement that Arizona Governor Jane Hull signed legislation this week permitting the state's fleet operators to use biodiesel fuel as an alternative to buying new vehicles under clean air vehicle acquisition mandates.
The action follows similar recent moves in Ohio, Maryland, New Jersey and Delaware, it said.
