July 11, 2002CVEC expansion underway By Reed Anfinson
Work is underway at the Chippewa Valley Ethanol Company (CVEC) on an expansion that will nearly double the plant’s production.
When it was constructed more than six years ago, CVEC was designed to produce 15 million gallons of ethanol annually consuming 6 million bushels of corn.
However, the plant has consistently produced beyond its design capacity. Through improvements to the plant in recent years, its capacity was raised to more than 20 million gallons. Now the plant would like to double its output to 40 million gallons annually.
Once the plant is constructed, however, it will be permitted to produce up to 49.5 million gallons of ethanol. CVEC General Manager Bill Lee has said he would like to see the operation gradually build toward that goal.
Production of distillers dried grain, which is used for animal feed, is projected to increase from 67,615 tons per year to 149,417 tons per year. The amount of corn processed should increase from 8.3 million bushels currently to 18.3 million bushels per year.
To reach those goals, the ethanol cooperative has raised just over $9.5 million from its stockholders which is made up of 860 farm families as well as other local investors. In all, it is expected that the expansion will cost $21 million.
