August 31, 2000Biodiesel Makes Move Into Ethanol Market The National Biodiesel Board (NBB) recently announced that school and transit industries are fueling the success of biodiesel, an alternative fuel derived from soybean oil or used cooking oil.
Ethanol, an alternative fuel derived primarily from corn, remains one of biodiesel's stronger competitors, with ethanol production reaching 1.6 million gallons a year compared to biodiesel's 30 million gallons a year.
However, while there were only two registered biodiesel suppliers in 1996, today, that number has grown to over a dozen.
NBB executive director Joseph Jobe said biodiesel has fueled transit buses and trucks over 30 million miles, with "one of the most dramatic increases...in federal fleets."
Thanks to recently signed legislation by Arizona Governor Jane Hull, Arizona fleet operators will be able to use biodiesel fuels, such as B20, in their current fleets instead of purchasing new vehicles that meet strict air quality standards. According to the Jefferson City, MO branch of NBB, similar actions have followed suit in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, and Ohio.
