August 8, 2002ETHANOL PLANT OPEN HOUSE WORKFORCE OF 40 FOR 40 MILLION GALLON FACILITY
Tall Corn Ethanol, located north of Highway 141 between Bayard and Coon Rapids, will hold an open house for investors and the general public Friday, August 9. Construction of the plant is nearly complete after over a year of construction.
Godbersen-Smith construction of Ida Grove will pave a mile long section of Grant Avenue to accommodate traffic to the plant. The road construction is expected to be completed in late August. Currently, the Burlington Northern-Santa Fe Railroad is replacing an overpass.
TCE began taking corn on a regular basis three weeks ago to test equipment. Once production begins, the plant will use 15 million bushels of corn and produce 40 million gallons of ethanol annually as well as high quality animal grain feed. About one-third of the corn processed will come from the 450 area farmers that have invested in the operation.
Plant buildings include a processing plant, grains building, two half-million bushel grain bins, two million gallon ethanol-storage tanks, three smaller tanks, an administration building and scalehouse building.
Owen Shunkwiler, TCE General Manager, has hired a workforce of 40 to operate the facility 24 hours a day. Shunkwiler estimates payroll at $1.3 million dollars per year.
The open house agenda will include tours for the investors in the morning from 9-11. A grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony will take place at 11 a. m. The general public will be allowed to tour the facility from 1-3 p.m.
Several special guests will be attending TCE's open house. Governor Tom Vilsack will visit the plant in the afternoon. U.S. Senators Chuck Grassley and Tom Harkin and U.S. Representative Greg Ganske also will be in attendance.
Due to road construction on Grant Avenue, parking will not be available at the open house. Guests are asked to park at the Coon Rapids-Bayard High School. TCE will have chartered buses at the school that will transport visitors to the plant every 10-15 minutes.
