August 29, 2002N.J. to help build plant to produce ethanol August 28, 2002/Associated Press
TRENTON - The state will work with a private agricultural corporation to build the mid-Atlantic region's first ethanol production plant in New Jersey, Governor McGreevey announced Tuesday.
McGreevey said the move would aid the state's agricultural industry and protect its environment.
"This ethanol facility is the key to providing a major new market for our grain growers," McGreevey said.
Ethanol is a corn-based additive that makes gasoline burn cleaner.
The state also will help find funding for the facility as part of a partnership with Garden State Ethanol, a private corporation of farmers, investors, and other agricultural interests.
Agriculture Secretary Charles M. Kuperus, who will lead that effort, said entities such as the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority and the Economic Development Authority may participate in the funding assistance plan, which has yet to be formalized.
"We need to expand the market for our agricultural products," Kuperus said.
Kuperus also said it is too early to tell whether the state, as a partner in the venture, will share in its profits.
Garden State Ethanol would construct the facility at an as yet undetermined site in southern New Jersey.
Goals for the plant include processing 14.2 million bushels of corn to produce 40 million gallons of ethanol.
The ethanol wold be used as an environmentally friendly ingredient for gasoline, McGreevey said.
Other products could include 121,000 tons of distiller grains for livestock feed and 121,000 tons of carbon dioxide sold to the carbonated beverage or dry ice markets.
