September 12, 2002Canegrowers welcome ethanol excise The Canegrowers organisation has welcomed moves by the Federal Government to protect the development of an ethanol industry in Australia.
The Government has announced it will extend the petrol excise to the sugar cane derived fuel, and will subsidise producers by the same amount.
The excise will be imposed at 38 cents a litre from next Tuesday.
Canegrowers chairman Jim Pedersen says the decision will safeguard the Australian ethanol industry.
"It's obviously been done to protect the development of a new industry in Australia," he said.
"It's the only way it could be done to stop cheap imports coming in and allow an industry to develop here."
