WINNIPEG -- Manitoba and Saskatchewan are competing to become Canada's leading producer of ethanol.
The renewable grain-based fuel may be a key to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Saskatchewan took an early lead this month when it announced construction of a 55 (m) million-dollar plant that will produce up to 80 million litres of ethanol per year.
Prairie Sun Energy Products, the private-sector partner in the venture, has promised to build up to three additional plants of similar size.
Manitoba, meanwhile, is in the last stages of a public consultation that will produce a report in early November.
The Manitoba government has so far not outlined its policies or incentives for ethanol plant construction in the province.
Manitoba's Opposition Conservative leader, Stuart Murray, says the province's N-D-P government has talked a good game on ethanol but is slow to make it happen.
