November 22, 2002Ethanol Industry Sets All-Time Monthly Production Record
by Julianne Johnston
The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) announced that an all-time monthly production record was set in October of 159,000 barrels per day (b/d) of ethanol. The previous record of 138,000 bpd (revised) was set in September. Production for the month was up 31 percent compared to last October when 121,000 b/d of ethanol were produced.
The Renewable Fuels Association (RFA), says the ethanol industry is on track to produce an annual record of approximately 2 billion gallons this year. Currently, 68 ethanol plants have the capacity to produce over 2.65 billion gallons annually. Ten additional plants are currently under construction
RFA also notes that when California Governor Gray Davis issued an Executive Order phasing out the use of MTBE, the U.S. ethanol industry commenced the most aggressive expansion in its history. "The production numbers released by EIA reaffirm the industry’s commitment and ability to meet the new demand created as MTBE is replaced with clean burning, environmentally safe ethanol," they said in an official statement.
“Simply put, ethanol is available for any California refiner wishing to switch from MTBE in 2003,” said Bob Dinneen, RFA president. “With the addition of 12 new plants and several expansions this year, the ethanol industry is already producing at the level needed to meet existing markets and the new demand from California. Three years ago some questioned whether the ethanol industry could supply California with a safe, clean substitute to MTBE. The latest production statistics leave no doubt. Ethanol remains the most cost-effective oxygenate and octane enhancer on the market today.”
