December 5, 2002Red River Valley is Home to Newest Minnesota E85 Fueling Station
The Breck Amoco in Breckinridge is now the 70th station in Minnesota selling E85 to the general public. The American Lung Association of Minnesota (ALAMN) thanked station-owner Clint Conzemius for being the first in the Wahpeton-Breckinridge area to offer the clean-burning, high-octane, renewable alternative fuel that is 85 percent corn-based ethanol.
"We are very excited," said Conzemius. "We think our dividends are going to come in the form of being pro-agriculture...we want to really demonstrate to people where we stand, that we know where our business comes from."
Breck Amoco began pumping E85 on Friday, Nov. 22, and the renewable fuel has made up about three percent of total sales in its first few days. But Conzemius feels confident the trade will grow, between promotions like the one with ALAMN, and his ability to sell E85 at 15 cents less than regular unleaded gasoline. The station installed all new equipment, and invested close to $40,000 for a new underground storage tank, sensors, piping, lines and a pump. The station buried the storage tank on Sept 10 and took delivery of 5,100 gallons of E85 from Chippewa Valley Ethanol Coop right away.
On December 4, working with ALAMN, Breck Amoco will send out 650 flyers to area farmers on both sides of the Red River, alerting them to this latest spot where E85 customers can refuel. The mailing will include a map of all 70 Minnesota E85 fueling sites, and at Conzemius' request, will also include four close-by E85 sites in North Dakota.
"We wanted to promote buy-in from people on both sides of the river," said Conzemius.
Currently, more than 85,000 cars in Minnesota are capable of filling up with E85, according to Tim Gerlach, director of outdoor air programs for ALAMN. The growing number of flexible fuel vehicles is spurring greater interest among gas station owners, with another ten stations now considering installing E85 pumps.
Conzemius has partnered with Wallie Hardie, a member of the North Dakota Corn Utilization Board, to make presentations to area agri-businesses and governmental units, to make a pitch for adding flexible fuel vehicles - capable of using E85 - to their vehicle fleets. Signs and banners at the Amoco station educate drivers who come through about E85. Next, Conzemius plans to meet with local car dealers, to help them educate the driving public about E85.
