January 29, 2003Gutknecht will lead House Agriculture subcommittee Tom Ford
Published Jan. 29, 2003
Star Tribune Washington Bureau Correspondent
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Rep. Gil Gutknecht, R-Minn., announced Tuesday that he will lead the House Agriculture subcommittee on operations, oversight, nutrition and forestry.
"In virtually every single area that we're going to have oversight responsibility I think we can say there are very important relationships to the state of Minnesota," he said.
The panel oversees biofuels, dairy policy, the federal food stamp program and implementation of the $180 billion farm bill Congress passed last year.
Of particular concern for Gutknecht will be his role in defending the interests and importance of biofuels such as ethanol, a major Minnesota resource. He said he will also work to get more farmers signed up to participate in programs set forth in the farm bill. Fewer than 20 percent of Minnesota farmers have done so, he said, and the sign-up deadline is April 1.
Gutknecht said that members from southern states have historically dominated House leadership offices because they tend to remain in office longer than members from northern districts.
Entering his fifth term, Gutknecht ranks 201st in seniority in the 435-member body, according to a recent report by Roll Call, a Capitol Hill publication.
The Minnesota congressional delegation as a whole ranks 32nd in clout among the 50 states, Roll Call found. That's based on factors that include the size of a delegation, how many members have committee or party leadership posts and the federal dollars a state receives.
Also Tuesday, Rep. Betty McCollum, D-Minn., was named to the House International Relations Committee. She will retain her spot on the Education and Workforce Committee, but will relinquish her seat on the Resources Committee.
