May 26, 2000MTBE Banned in New York Today New York Governor George Pataki signed a bill (AB 5513) which bans the use of MTBE in the state beginning January 1, 2004.
"The use of MTBE in gasoline has significant environmental impacts on groundwater," Pataki said. "Today's action is necessary to protect public health and safeguard the State's precious water resources."
The ban will prohibit the use, sale and importation of MTBE as of 2004 under penalty of up to $10,000.
The RFA sent a letter to the Governor's yesterday responding to a position paper opposing AB 5513 by the Northeast States for Coordinated Air Use Management (NESCAUM), which contained numerous inaccuracies with regard to the use of ethanol in RFG.
