February 10, 2003Australia Govt. Urged to Decide on Ethanol Policy
The director of a company behind an ethanol plant in southern Queensland says Australia's multi-million-dollar renewable fuel projects are at risk, until the Federal Government gives some certainty on ethanol excise.
Petro Fuels has proposed a $70 million Dalby Bio-Refinery ethanol plant.
Director Chris Harrison says in 2001, the Cleaner Transport Fuels for Australia policy gave assurances there would be no excise on ethanol, but 18 months later, the Government still has not made a final ruling.
He says the benefits of renewable fuels and regional development has been lost in the media hype over the percentage of ethanol in fuel.
"It's just a shame that a bit of bad press about the blend of ethanol or the quantity of ethanol in fuel has potentially derailed the whole renewable fuels industry in Australia," he said.
A decision on ethanol excise is expected by Petro Fuels during this month's Federal Cabinet meeting.
