March 5, 2003Ethanol Industry Urges Connecticut to Ban MTBE by Julianne Johnston
The Renewable Fuels Association (RFA) today delivered a letter to Connecticut lawmakers, urging them to coordinate with New York to ban MTBE at the end of 2003, rather than enact Senate Bill 840, which would indefinitely delay the state’s MTBE ban currently scheduled to take effect on October 1, 2003.
“Based upon California’s smooth and successful transition from MTBE to ethanol and knowledge of the east coast fuel infrastructure, we believe January 1, 2004 is the optimum date for removing MTBE from Connecticut’s fuel supply,” wrote Bob Dinneen, RFA president, in the letter. “As you know, New York is scheduled to remove MTBE from all gasoline on or before January 1, 2004. Since much of Connecticut’s gasoline comes from the New York Harbor, removing MTBE concurrently with New York improves the likelihood of a seamless transition. Delaying the MTBE ban beyond New York’s January 1, 2004 deadline could well result in the price spikes and supply disruptions proponents of SB 840 intend to avoid.”
Dinneen noted that the use of ethanol is not new to Connecticut or New York as ethanol is currently blended in both states. At RFA’s National Ethanol Conference last month, Paul Stendardi, Director of Logistics for Getty Petroleum Marketing, spoke of Getty’s ethanol blending in Connecticut and the Northeast. Specifically, Mr. Stendardi stated, “We’ve been blending with ethanol, longer than 12 years… And it works. It’s been very good to Getty. If it wasn’t for ethanol blending and the margin improvement we might not even be here today as the company that we are… so it’s been very good for us.”
Dinneen concluded, “In addition to the ethanol blending currently occurring in the Northeast, California’s successful experience of removing MTBE should give Connecticut policymakers confidence that MTBE can be removed from gasoline in a smooth and orderly fashion. It is now clear that ethanol blending can help lower consumer fuel costs. A recent article published by Reuters News Service states that ethanol blended gasoline in California is selling at a 4-cent discount to MTBE gasoline. At a recent meeting, California Energy Commissioner Jim Boyd stated that gas prices were not going to rise because of the switch to ethanol.”
