April 9, 2003NCGA Outraged by Anti-Ethanol Amendments to Fuels Security Act by Julianne Johnston
Leaders of the National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) said they were outraged when more 20 anti-ethanol amendments to the Fuels Security Act of 2003, or S. 791, were offered by Sens. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) and Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.).
The Boxer-Clinton amendments would, among other things, grant waivers to the states of New York and Connecticut from the oxygenate standard under the Clean Air Act, even though the Environmental Protection Agency denied a waiver request from the state of New York last week.
"We were expecting one, two amendments at the most," said NCGA President Fred Yoder. "But this flurry of anti-renewable fuels sentiment is astounding.
"Corn growers will be closely watching how members treat this bill in the coming days," continued Yoder. "Securing a renewable fuels standard is of great importance to producers, rural economies, clean air and our energy security."
