September 26, 2000Australia government funds ethanol industry study Australia's Federal government will fund a study into the commercial viability of increasing ethanol fuel production by the sugar industry, Agriculture Minister Warren Truss said on Tuesday.
Some sugar mills were already producing ethanol from waste cane, most of it used to meet their own fuel needs or to produce a variety of speciality products, Truss said in a statement.
"There are differing opinions on the commercial viability of large-scale ethanol production," he said, adding that it could be more attractive with higher world oil prices.
Ethanol produced from grain was currently mixed with petrol in some parts of New South Wales, while ethanol from sugar had been used in petrol in the Mackay area of Queensland about 10 years ago before sugar prices improved.
The government study, estimated to cost A$20,000, would be co-ordinated by its commodities think tank the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics (ABARE).
