May 22, 2003Sugar industry backs ethanol trial Queensland sugar producers are embracing a major petrol provider's move to run a six-month trial of 10 per cent ethanol-blended fuel in Cairns.
Canegrowers spokesman George Adil said he hopes the project will add to the push for funding for an ethanol plant on the Tablelands.
Caltex launched the trial yesterday.
Mr Adil said if the experiment is successful and E-10 does become commercially viable, it will mean the rejuvination of both the grain and sugar industries.
"I'd love to see a 10 per cent blend adopted all over Australia, and this would revitalise the sugar industry and the grain growing industry and at the same time provide environmental benefits for everybody," he said.
"We are looking to develop a partnership with fuel companies that may adopt the blend as a permanent fixture."
Meanwhile, the RACQ is also applauding Caltex's decision to increase consumer choice at the bowser.
Spokesman Ken Willett says the club is satisfied the blend will not pose any mechanical problems and is confident motorists will be adequately aware of what they are buying.
He says a survey, which is being facilitated by a $30,000 State Government contribution, will be a good indication of consumer preference.
