August 21, 2003Ethanol for Atomic Weapons Facility in Texas August 21, 2003 [SolarAccess.com]- An atomic weapons plant in Texas is switching from fossil fuels to ethanol for environmental concerns. A service station at the Pantex Plant near Amarillo, Texas, has installed a new 10,000-gallon E85 tank on the premises. This will be the second service station in Texas to pump ethanol-based fuel. The facility also offers biodiesel and unleaded gasoline for its 300-vehicle fleet. BWXT Pantex, which manages and operates the Pantex nuclear weapons facility for the U.S. Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration, will initially be using E85, the renewable fuel product, for 80 vehicles at the site, but hopes to have more than 200 flexible-fuel vehicles within the next two years. Pantex installed the E85 tank to help the plant comply with Executive Order 13149, which requires the federal government to decrease its petroleum use by 20 percent by 2005. An event is planned for the last week of the month to celebrate the opening of the pump.
