December 8, 2003Bloomington tries powering buses with soy biodiesel fuel Associated Press
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Long a hotbed of environmental sentiments, this college town is now doing its part to help the environment by running some city buses on a cleaner-burning soy biodiesel fuel mixture.
Under the yearlong pilot program, the city and the Monroe County Community School Corp. recently began powering four buses each with the soy biodiesel mixture. Indiana University will begin using the fuel on two of its buses next month.
Studies have show that soy biodiesel runs cleaner than traditional diesel exhaust, which has been linked to lung cancer. The EPA is tightening regulations on diesel emissions starting in 2006.
Unlike many alternative fuels, B20 -- a blend of 20 percent soy biodiesel and 80 percent petroleum diesel -- can be used in traditional diesel engines with no modifications required.
At present, B20 costs about 20 to 25 cents more per gallon than petroleum diesel, but experts predict that its cost will decrease over time.
