December 10, 2003Company looks to buy land for ethanol plant FORT DODGE, Iowa - A South Dakota company is looking at land in Webster County for a new ethanol plant, local economic development officials said Tuesday.
VeraSun Energy, of Aurora, S.D., wants to build a 100-mmgy ethanol plant on the land, currently owned by A.E. Staley Co.
Construction on the plant could begin as soon as next summer, said James Crane, director of Webster County Development.
The plant would employ up to 60 people and help boost the market price of corn, Crane said.
"It would have a tremendous affect on the local ag economy, since they would pay a premium price for corn," Crane said.
The construction of the plant also would benefit the local economy with jobs and the purchase of materials and supplies, he said.
But it's not a done deal, yet, Crane said.
"We're still working with them on an incentive program, but the site has two intersecting mainline railroads and it's on Iowa Highway 7, so the site is more competitive than other sites and we're optimistic we'll get it done," he said.
