March 18, 2004CARGILL'S TERRY JAFFONI NAMED VICE CHAIR BIOMASS RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT TECHNICAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE Committee Provides Evaluation of DOE and USDA Biomass Research
Washington, DC – Former Illinois Congressman Tom Ewing announced yesterday the appointment of Terry Jaffoni as vice chair of the Biomass Research and Development Technical Advisory Committee. The Committee advises the Secretaries of Energy and Agriculture on the technical focus and direction of research under the Biomass Research and Development Initiative.
“I’m excited about the appointment,” said Terry Jaffoni, Director of Biofuels Strategy at Cargill, Inc. “It is quite an honor. As a person from industry, I can bring hands-on knowledge in both the technical and commercial aspects of developing a viable biobased products industry. The Committee will have an energetic agenda for the year. We will continue our role in evaluating biomass program activities at both the Department of Energy (DOE) and USDA. But this year we also hope to make recommendations regarding federal procurement of biobased products, the USDA/DOE joint solicitation process and the role of biomass, and specifically ethanol, in the hydrogen economy.
The Biomass R&D; Technical Advisory Committee was established in 2000 when the Congress passed the Biomass R&D; Act, which created a research initiative focused on producing fuels, power, chemicals, and materials from a wide variety of biomass. In addition to providing research focus, the Biomass R&D; Technical Advisory Committee evaluates the performance of research and other activities carried out under this program. More information can be found at: www.bioproducts-bioenergy.gov.
“Terry’s appointment as vice chair of this important committee is recognition of her expertise and dedication to securing a more sustainable future through the use of biobased products,” said Renewable Fuels Association President Bob Dinneen. “In addition, I believe her appointment is recognition of the role the ethanol industry is already playing to secure that future. Terry has been a successful leader in the ethanol industry as it has expanded. I’m confident she will translate that experience and can-do attitude to her work on the Committee promoting all uses of biomass.”
