March 31, 2005Earthrace To Auction Crew Positions On EBay Round The World Biodiesel Challenge Offering “Ride of a Lifetime”
16 March 2005, Auckland, New Zealand: Powerboat record challenger The Earthrace is offering 12 chances to participate in one of the world’s greatest adventures: becoming a crew member on a 78 foot biodiesel-powered superboat as it makes a bid to break the world record for circumnavigating the globe.
The Earthrace, currently under construction in Auckland, New Zealand, is the world’s greenest powerboat and is the first biodiesel powered craft to make a bid for an official UIM record.
Crew positions for each leg of the journey will be offered for sale on EBay from April 1st as luxury adventure packages. Successful bidders will be flown to their chosen port, where they will stay in a luxury hotel while waiting for the Earthrace boat to arrive in port. They will then board the boat when it arrives for refuelling and join the crew for a full throttle seven-day ride to the next port stop. When the boat arrives at the next stop, successful bidders will relax overnight in luxury accommodation before being flown home.
“This really is the ride of a lifetime”, says Earthrace founder and boat skipper Pete Bethune, an ex-oil exploration engineer who has become a passionate advocate for biodiesel. “The round the world race is one of the world’s great challenges, and we will be making history out on the water with our unique powerboat. By making crew positions available on EBay, we’re giving ordinary people an extraordinary opportunity to make history”.
Due on the start-finish line in Barbados in March 2006, The Earthrace will race around the world, and Bethune is aiming to complete the voyage in 65 days, smashing the current record of 75 days set in 1998 by the British-based Cable and Wireless Adventurer.
The Earthrace boat is a high tech feat of marine engineering, with its wave-piercing hull designed by New Zealand naval architect Craig Loomes. The $2 million craft comes complete with an impressive array of leading-edge technology and environmental features such as a world-first carbon fibre driveshaft with variable pitch propeller blades, an on board communications suite complete with satellite feeds to deliver daily video updates and real-time speed and location data, biodegradable lubricants, non toxic antifouling and solar power.
The port stops at which successful EBay bidders will meet the Earthrace boat are
Barbados, Panama City, Acapulco, San Diego, Hawaii , Marshall Islands, Palau, Singapore, Mangalore (India), Salalah (Oman), Suez (Egypt), Valetta (Malta), Tenerieffe (Canary Islands) and back to Barbados to finish.
The Barbados- Panama City auction will be posted on EBay from April 1, with subsequent legs becoming available in two-week intervals.
